THE DALLAS WAY DONATES $15,000 TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS LIBRARIES
FUNDS FOR DIGITIZING GLBT ARCHIVES
(October 22, 2014) DALLAS — The Dallas Way, a non-profit GLBT history project organized to gather, store, organize and present the GLBT history of Dallas, Texas, recently presented an unrestricted $15,000.00 grant to the GLBT Special Collections at the University of North Texas Libraries. The Dallas Way Chairman of the Board, Buddy Mullino, made the surprise presentation at a recent Outrageous Oral event on the UNT campus.
Morgan Gieringer, head of Special Collections at the UNT Libraries says,
“The Special Collections department is so grateful to The Dallas Way for their generous support. This gift will allow us to triple the amount of GLBT content in the digital library and further the reach of the great work The Dallas Way already does to document GLBT history.”
To date, The Dallas Way has greatly augmented the GLBT archives at UNT. Six major documents collections – those of the Texas Human Rights Foundation, Jack Evans and George Harris, Dennis Vercher, Al Daniels, Molly Behannon and Bruce Jaster – are currently in the UNT archives awaiting digitization. Jack Evans and George Harris are the founders of The Dallas Way. Dennis Vercher was Editor of the Dallas Voice until his death in 2006. He was one of the longest survivors of HIV/AIDS in Dallas County and produced a large number of significant writings, recordings, notes and files from his extensive coverage of the GLBT community.
Also held in the UNT collection are all editions published by The Dallas Voice since its founding in 1984. Digitization of those materials is underway with an additional funding grant the UNT libraries recently received from a different source.
Mullino says, ”The Dallas Way is honored to present the first of what we hope will be many gifts to UNT for funding digitization of collections curated to UNT by The Dallas Way.”
Donations of additional archival materials that reference GLBT life in North Texas are invited and may be made to The Dallas Way and dedicated to the UNT collections.
